ATM Wallis and Futuna: cash, banks and what to bring
ATM Wallis and Futuna: one bank, three cash machines on Wallis, two on Futuna, no airport exchange and many shops without card terminals. Plan your cash.
01
What the official information says
The tourism board's practical information gives the picture in a few lines. The only retail bank is the Bank of Wallis and Futuna. It runs 3 ATMs on Wallis and 2 on Futuna, which is five cash machines for the whole territory.
The same page warns that many shops lack card terminals and that there is no exchange office at Hihifo airport on Wallis or at Vele airport on Futuna. Its advice is blunt: exchange money before arriving.
02
The currency you will be handling
The currency is the CFP franc, written XPF, which is pegged to the euro. If you hold euros, that is useful to know when you compare prices, but you cannot assume euros are accepted in shops, so plan to hold francs.
We have not published an exchange rate or a price list here. Both change, and our records give no confirmed figures, so check the current rate with your bank or a currency provider before you leave.
03
What we do not know about the ATMs
Searches such as bank Mata-Utu, distributeur Wallis or BWF bank Wallis suggest people want exact locations. Our records do not give the street or village of any of the five machines, and we will not guess.
We also have no figures for withdrawal limits, fees, opening hours or the card networks the machines accept, and no information on whether a foreign-issued card will work. Treat all of that as unknown until you have checked with your own bank and with the Tourist Office, whose contact form is on wallis-futuna.travel.
04
Build a cash plan, not a card plan
With only five machines and a patchy card network, the safe approach is to arrive with enough francs for the first days, then treat the ATMs as a top-up rather than your main source.
Think through what you will pay for in cash. Many activity providers are small associations or families. One listing for the taxi boat to Alofi states that it is cash only and has to be booked a day ahead. Do not assume that a boat captain, a snack bar or a hire car owner can take a card.
05
Withdrawing cash on Futuna
If you are flying on to Futuna, remember that the island has only 2 of the 5 ATMs, and that Vele airport has no exchange office either. Futuna is also the side of the territory where roads are poorer, with dirt roads to key sites, and there is no public transport or taxi service, so a cash shortage is awkward to fix.
A sensible rule is to withdraw what you need for Futuna while you are still on Wallis, within the limits your own bank allows.
06
Cash and local custom
Cash is part of daily life here beyond shopping. Customary gifts on Wallis include kava root, tobacco or money, and banknotes became part of ceremonies such as the katoaga. Spectators also reward dancers with banknotes.
If you attend a ceremony as a guest, ask your host before you offer or handle money, because gifts follow custom and rank. Small notes are useful, but the point is to ask, not to guess.
07
A short checklist before you fly
Tell your bank you are travelling to a French overseas collectivity in the Pacific. Carry the francs you need for the first days, split between bags. Keep a note of the Tourist Office contact form so you can ask about machines. Bring a travel insurance policy that covers local treatment and medical evacuation, since an emergency is not the moment to learn that cash is short.
