Car hire in Wallis and Futuna is the default way to get around: the tourism board says there is no public transport and no taxis, so a hire car is needed, and traffic drives on the right. Ten companies are listed, six on Wallis and four on Futuna, and one has a desk at Hihifo Airport.

Car Hire in Wallis and Futuna: Who Rents and What to Ask
Car hire Wallis and Futuna: ten companies are listed, there are no taxis or public transport, and driving is on the right. Read what to ask before booking.
01
Why you will probably need a car
If you are looking for a taxi in Wallis, the tourism board's practical information is blunt: there is no public transport and no taxis. A hire car is needed to see the islands, and traffic drives on the right.
If you want to rent a car in Wallis (location voiture Wallis), the options are below. The island is small enough that this is manageable. A coastal drive round the island is about 35 km, so the question is less how far you must go than how many days you want to have the car. On Futuna, the picture changes, as we explain below.
02
Who rents cars on Wallis
Six companies are listed on the official tourism board's transport pages for Wallis. Haviti Location is in Mata'Utu with a desk at the airport, which is the obvious choice if you want the keys when you land. LS Location is at Liku, Eden SARL (Eden Auto Service) is in Mata'Utu, Fuga'Uvea Location is at Tepa in Mua, and Siokivaka is in Mata'Utu.
Wallis Voyages, at Aka'aka, offers car hire and guided tours. If you would rather not drive on your first day, ask whether a guided tour can be combined with a rental.
03
Who rents cars on Futuna
Four companies handle car rental on Futuna. Corail Renting is at Tavai in Sigave, Hasard Location is at Malae in Alo, Loc Auto Futuna is at Taoa in Alo and SB Travel is at Leava.
Futuna's airport is Pointe Vele, at Vele in Alo. If you are flying between the islands, arrange your Futuna car before you arrive and ask whether the company can meet you at the airport.
04
Scooters, bicycles and taxis
If you were hoping to rent a scooter or a motorbike, our records found none. Plan on a car instead.
There are no road taxis to fall back on. Taxi boats do exist, but they are water taxis that run to the lagoon islets from places such as Gahi Bay, Vailala, Alele and Liku, and they will not get you to your hotel.
05
Roads and driving conditions
Roads on Futuna are poorer than those on Wallis, with dirt roads to key sites. Since Cyclone Tomas in 2010 the main coastal road has been cut at Pointe des Pyramides, so check its status before you drive.
The tourism board describes the islands as safe and almost free of crime, but driving still needs care. Annual rainfall is above 3,000 mm according to the board, so expect wet roads at times, and take your time on unfamiliar ones.
06
What to ask before you book
Rates and conditions on each company's listing are undated, and our records do not hold current prices, so we show none. Ask for the daily price in CFP francs, what is included, the deposit, fuel arrangements, how you pay, and what happens if the car breaks down.
Licence rules are also not in our records. Ask each company which driving licence it accepts, and whether you need an international permit, before you travel. Many shops lack card terminals and there is no exchange office at the airports, so agree in advance whether the company takes cards or cash.
Finally, ask early if you plan to visit around 28 April, Saint Pierre Chanel's day. The tourism office head says about 1,000 pilgrims come then, so it is sensible to confirm your car well ahead.
Questions people ask.
- Can I rent a car in Wallis and Futuna?
- Yes. The tourism board lists six hire companies on Wallis and four on Futuna. There is no public transport and no taxis, so a hire car is needed. Traffic drives on the right.
- Is there a car hire desk at the airport?
- Haviti Location, based in Mata'Utu, has a desk at the airport on Wallis. For other companies, ask whether they can deliver or meet you at the airport.
- Can I rent a scooter in Wallis?
- We found no scooter or motorbike hire in our records. Plan on a hire car, and ask locally if you need something smaller.
- Are there taxis in Wallis and Futuna?
