XPF to USD is a two-step sum, because the CFP franc (XPF) used in Wallis and Futuna is pegged to the euro. Convert francs to euros at the peg, then euros to dollars at the day's market rate. We do not publish a live rate on this page, so take the exact figures from the central bank institute IEOM or your own bank.

XPF to USD and EUR: the CFP franc in Wallis and Futuna
XPF to USD and EUR explained: the CFP franc is pegged to the euro. How to convert, where cash is needed, and which rate source to trust.
01
What the CFP franc is
The currency of Wallis and Futuna is the CFP franc, with the code XPF. You will also see it called the Pacific franc. It is not the euro, even though the territory is a French overseas collectivity, and prices on the islands are shown in francs.
The key fact for a traveller is the peg: the franc is pegged to the euro. A peg ties one currency to another at an agreed relationship, so the franc does not float freely against the euro from day to day.
02
XPF to EUR and the euro peg
If you are searching for XPF to EUR or for how the CFP franc euro peg works, the answer is that the relationship is set rather than negotiated daily. Because of that, one conversion factor serves for every day of your trip, and a price in francs does not drift against the euro while you travel.
We are deliberately not printing that factor here. Our research did not reach an official source we could cite for the current figure, and honesty is more useful than a number we cannot trace. The central bank institute IEOM publishes material on the territory's currency, and your bank will quote the euro-franc relationship precisely. (For French readers: convertir franc pacifique euro, then check the figure with the IEOM or your bank.)
03
XPF to USD: how to work it out
Dollars are the harder half, because the US dollar is not tied to the franc. The route is therefore: take your amount in francs, divide by the peg to get euros, then multiply by the current euro-to-dollar rate shown by your bank or card provider. That last rate changes during the day, so a dollar figure is only ever an estimate.
The same method answers a question such as 1000 XPF in dollars. Work out the euros first, then apply the day's euro-dollar rate. Do the sum on the day you pay, not weeks beforehand, and allow for whatever margin your bank or card adds.
04
Cash, cards and cash machines
Plan on carrying francs. Many shops on the islands lack card terminals, and there is no exchange office at Hihifo Airport on Wallis or at Vele Airport on Futuna, so the territory's own advice is to exchange money before arriving.
The only retail bank is the Bank of Wallis and Futuna, with three ATMs on Wallis and two on Futuna. We have no list of which machines accept which foreign cards, and we cannot confirm withdrawal limits or fees, so ask your own bank before you leave and keep a cash reserve.
05
Other currencies you may pass through
Nearby Pacific countries use different currencies. Fiji uses the Fijian dollar, Samoa the tala, Tonga the pa'anga, and American Samoa the US dollar. Niue and Tokelau use the New Zealand dollar. These are not the local currency, so do not rely on leftover cash from a connecting stop.
It is worth finishing your spending in the earlier country before you fly, and converting only what you expect to need in francs.
06
Reading prices and carrying cash in
Prices published by the tourism board for lodging and activities are listed in francs and are undated. Treat any figure you see, including ones on other websites, as a guide, and reconfirm with the operator before you commit. We have left prices out of this guide for that reason.
On the customs side, rules are strict, and you should declare anything dutiable. Check the current cash-declaration rule with French customs before you travel with large amounts.
Questions people ask.
- What is the exchange rate of XPF to USD?
- There is no fixed rate. XPF is pegged to the euro, and the dollar value depends on the day's euro-dollar rate. Convert francs to euros at the peg, then euros to dollars using your bank's current rate.
- Is the CFP franc the same as the euro?
- No. The currency in Wallis and Futuna is the CFP franc (XPF), pegged to the euro. Euros are not the local currency, so plan to exchange before you arrive.
- Can I withdraw money in Wallis and Futuna?
- There are three ATMs on Wallis and two on Futuna, all run by the Bank of Wallis and Futuna, the only retail bank. We cannot confirm which foreign cards they accept, so check with your bank and carry cash as well.
- Can I exchange money at the airport?
- No. There is no exchange office at Hihifo or Vele airports. Exchange money before you arrive.
