Hotels in Futuna: The Small Set of Places to Stay

Hotels in Futuna: Hotel Fiafia, Somalama Park Hotel and MMF Hébergement are listed by the tourism board. How to choose, and what to confirm first.

Hotels in Futuna are few and small. The official tourism board lists Hotel Fiafia at Nuku, Somalama Park Hotel at Toloke and MMF Hébergement at Kolia in Alo, and says Futuna also has a guesthouse and a few homestays. There are no dedicated online booking sites, so you contact each place directly and confirm rates yourself.

01

What is on offer

The tourism board's accommodation page says that Futuna has two hotels, a guesthouse and a few homestays. Across the whole territory, a recent tourism-office interview counts about fifteen accommodation offers, hotels and homestays together. This is not a place of resorts, and the territory's plan is to develop homestays with no luxury hotel projects.

All ten places on the board's accommodation page are listed as current, with no closures flagged. Three of them are in Futuna, covered below. Rates and room counts on the source pages are undated, so we show no prices.

The Futuna listings

Hotel Fiafia, in Nuku, has a restaurant and a bar.

Somalama Park Hotel, in Toloke, is family run and has a restaurant.

MMF Hébergement is at Kolia, in Alo, near the beach. Ask the host what is actually available.

If you were searching for a Sigave hotel or a Leava hotel, note that Leava is the capital of the kingdom of Sigave, but none of the three listings above is described as being in Leava, and our records do not say how far each is from it.

03

Choosing where to stay

With so few places, the choice comes down to practicalities. Ask each host whether meals are served, because two of the three listings mention a restaurant. Ask about airport transfers as well: Futuna's airport is Pointe Vele, in Alo, and there is no public transport and no taxis, so you will want to arrange transfers and a hire car.

Futuna's roads are poorer than those on Wallis, with dirt roads to key sites, and the main coastal road has been cut at Pointe des Pyramides since Cyclone Tomas. Ask your host which routes are passable before you plan day trips. The tourism board notes that access for reduced-mobility visitors is limited, so raise any mobility needs when you first enquire, and remember that the islands are described as safe and almost free of crime.

04

What to see from your base

On Futuna, the Poi basilica holds two silver reliquaries with Saint Pierre Chanel's skull and bones. Mont Puke, at 524 m, is the highest point of the territory, and the climb is described as demanding and suited to experienced hikers. In each village you will see fale tauasu, meeting houses where men gather nightly for kava. Dress modestly in villages and ask before photographing people.

Booking, cash and timing

Because there are no online booking sites, email or phone the host, ask for written confirmation, and ask whether they take cards. Many shops lack card terminals, there are no exchange offices at the airports, and Futuna has 2 ATMs, so bring cash in CFP francs.

Inter-island flights from Wallis do not run on Sundays, and we hold no confirmed schedule, so confirm flights before you fix your first night. IMPT, the booking platform, publishes this journal.
