Hotels in Wallis Island: Where to Stay and Who Each Suits

Seven places to stay on Wallis island, from Mata'Utu to Aka'aka, Lausikula and Liku. See where each sits and how to book direct.

There are seven places to stay on Wallis island listed by the official tourism board: three hotels, an inn, a gite, and two guesthouses. They sit in Mata'Utu, nearby Aka'aka, the south at Lausikula and Liku. None has a dedicated online booking site, so you contact them directly and confirm rates first.

01

What to expect from Wallis island hotels

The tourism board describes Wallis as having small family hotels, a B&B, an inn and a guesthouse. The territory's tourism plan is to develop homestays and secure hiking trails, with no luxury hotel projects, so lodging here is small-scale.

All ten places on the board's accommodation list, seven on Wallis and three on Futuna, were shown as current with no closures flagged. Rates and room counts on those pages are undated, which is why we do not print prices here. Ask for the current rate, what is included and how you pay.

02

Mata'Utu: the capital

Mata'Utu is the capital and main port of Wallis, and it is home to the blue volcanic-stone cathedral. Three places to stay are here. Auberge Tanoa is a backpacker-style inn. Gite Oceania is in the centre of town above the Teone snack bar. Hotel Ulukula has a restaurant.

Mata'Utu has the cathedral, and several restaurants and a bakery on the tourism board's list are in town. You will still need a hire car to see the rest of the island.

03

Aka'aka: two hotels just outside town

Hotel Lomipeau and Hotel Moana Hou are both in Aka'aka, in the Hahake district. Lomipeau is about 800 m from Mata'Utu, which puts the capital within easy reach while you sleep slightly outside it.

If looking out at the lagoon matters to you, ask the hotel which rooms have the view.

04

Lausikula: the south, near the crater lake

Lausikula Guesthouse is a chambre d'hotes at Lausikula in Mua, in the south of Wallis. It sits near Lake Lalolalo and the Talietumu site. Lalolalo is the largest lake in the territory, a crater lake roughly 400 to 500 m across and at least 80 m deep.

Lausikula beach, close by, is one of the island's sunset spots, and its chapel was rebuilt after cyclone damage and blessed in 2014. Choose the south if you want Lake Lalolalo and Talietumu close at hand. The guesthouse has its own website at lausikula.wf.

05

Liku: for the lagoon

Motu Location, a chambre d'hotes run as Liufau, is at Afala in Liku. Liku is home to the Vakala watersports centre, and visitors reach the lagoon islets by taxi boat or by kayak from there. That makes this corner a natural base if you plan to spend your days on the water.

Check with the Tourist Office about protected areas and rules before heading out to the islets.

How to book, and how to get around

There are no dedicated online booking sites for these places, so you write or call each one. Allow time for replies, and ask for confirmation in writing. Hotels and operators across the board's pages are listed without up-to-date rates, so every figure needs to be confirmed before you rely on it.

Plan transport at the same time. There is no public transport and no taxis, so a hire car is needed, and a coastal drive round Wallis is about 35 km. Hihifo Airport is the island's airport, with Aircalin services to Nouméa and Nadi shown in airline listings.
