SIM card Wallis and Futuna: what we know about mobile data

SIM card Wallis and Futuna: the Manuia 4G network, SIM cards sold at SPT offices, and what is still unconfirmed on eSIM, roaming, prices and coverage.

For a SIM card in Wallis and Futuna, mobile coverage is the Manuia 4G network and SIM cards are sold at SPT offices. Our records do not confirm eSIM support, roaming agreements, data prices or coverage maps, so check with your own provider and the Tourist Office before you travel.

01

What is confirmed

The tourism board's practical information is short but useful. Mobile coverage is the Manuia 4G network, and SIM cards are sold at SPT offices. That is the whole of what we can state as fact.

If you are searching for carte SIM Wallis, Wallis SIM or Manuia SIM, that is the answer to hold on to: one network, and SIM cards sold at the SPT offices.

The post office in Mata-Utu. Our records do not say which office sells SIM cards, so ask before you rely on it.

02

What we cannot confirm

Many of the questions people ask have no answer in our records. We do not know the price of a SIM or data plan, the opening hours or addresses of the SPT offices, whether you need your passport to buy a SIM, or whether data plans are sold by the day, week or month.

We also have no information on eSIM, on whether your home operator has a roaming agreement with the network, or on coverage maps. We would rather say so than guess, because a wrong tip about connectivity can leave you without a working phone on an island where the nearest alternative is far away.

03

How to settle it before you fly

Ask your home mobile provider two things in writing: whether roaming works on the Manuia network, and what it costs. If the answer is unclear, assume you will rely on a local SIM and on Wi-Fi at your accommodation, though we cannot confirm what Wi-Fi your lodging has.

Then ask the Tourist Office, via the contact form on wallis-futuna.travel, where and when SPT offices sell SIM cards. Make sure your phone is unlocked before you go if you intend to swap SIMs.

Your accommodation is the third question. The tourism board notes that lodgings on the islands have no dedicated online booking sites and are contacted directly, so when you write to book, ask whether there is Wi-Fi, whether it works in the rooms and whether it is included. Our records say nothing about it, and the answer will shape how much mobile data you need to buy.

If you plan to work or stream while you are there, treat that as a separate question to put to your host. Do not assume that the connection you rely on at home exists on the islands.

04

Why connectivity matters here

There is no public transport and no taxis, so you will hire a car, and Futuna's roads are poorer than those of Wallis, with dirt roads to key sites. Download offline maps before you land.

Calling the territory from France uses 00 681. For emergencies, the number is 15 from a mobile. Hospitals are the SIA on Wallis and Kaleveleve on Futuna.

05

Power and practicalities

While you sort out your phone, check your charger. Electricity is 220 V with French-type sockets, so you may need an adapter.

Many shops lack card terminals and there is no exchange office at either airport, so carry cash in CFP francs for a SIM or anything else. If you are trying to stay in touch with family, tell them your first days may be patchy while you find the SPT office.

06

Health, safety and insurance

The islands are described as safe and almost free of crime, but travel insurance covering local treatment and medical evacuation is advised. Let someone know your plans, particularly before hiking or heading out on the water.
