Passport Validity for Wallis and Futuna: What We Can Confirm
Passport validity for Wallis and Futuna: UK travellers need six months beyond departure. Here is what the records say on visas, yellow fever and customs.
01
The six-month rule
If you are searching for the six months passport Wallis rule (passeport Wallis et Futuna), the clearest published statement we hold comes from the UK government: a UK passport should be valid for six months after the date you leave the territory. Treat that as the safe planning standard.
Other governments set their own wording. If you hold a non-UK passport, read your own government's travel advice and the French rules; do not assume that the UK wording applies to you.
02
Why French rules apply
The territory is a French overseas collectivity. The tourism board says arrival documents are as for France: non-EU passengers need a passport, and many nationals need no visa. It points visitors to France-Visas to check their own situation.
For UK nationals, the UK advice adds the figure of up to 90 days visa-free for business or tourism. If you want to stay longer, or you are travelling to work or study, this page cannot tell you the rules; ask the French authorities, and read the official French and UK pages on the day you book rather than relying on a summary written in advance.
03
What we cannot confirm
A passport page would not be honest without a clear list of gaps. Our records do not state whether an onward or return ticket is checked on arrival, how many blank pages are needed, or what proof of funds officers may ask for. Those questions come up in neighbouring countries, but we hold no statement on this for Wallis and Futuna.
If your flights connect through Nouméa or Nadi, you may also need to meet the transit rules of those places. Check them separately with the airline and the relevant government.
04
Yellow fever and customs
A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a country with a risk of transmission, according to UK government advice. If your route includes such a country, sort this out before departure.
Customs rules are strict. Declare anything prohibited or dutiable. One small example from the records: kava is banned in metropolitan France, which matters if you plan to bring some home.
05
Insurance and health cover
The UK government advises taking insurance that covers local treatment and medical evacuation. Serious cases are usually evacuated to Nouméa, and the territory site describes healthcare as free for residents, so a visitor policy matters.
The SIA hospital serves Wallis and the Kaleveleve hospital serves Futuna; the emergency number from a mobile is 15.
06
Money and phones on arrival
Sort cash before you land: there is no exchange office at either airport, and many shops lack card terminals. The currency is the CFP franc (XPF), pegged to the euro. The only retail bank is the Bank of Wallis and Futuna, with three ATMs on Wallis and two on Futuna.
Mobile coverage is the Manuia 4G network, and SIM cards are sold at SPT offices.
