Cost of a Trip to Wallis and Futuna: What You Will Pay For

What a Wallis and Futuna trip costs you: flights, beds, food, car hire and cover. We explain each cost and why we show no figures yet.

The cost of a trip to Wallis and Futuna is made up of flights, somewhere to sleep, food, a hire car, boat trips and insurance, paid mostly in CFP francs and often in cash. We cannot give you reliable prices for any of them yet, because the fares and rates in our records are undated or unconfirmed, so this guide shows what you will pay for and how to get a real quote.

01

Why this guide has no price list

Most guides to how expensive Wallis and Futuna is quote a daily budget. We have chosen not to. The accommodation and operator pages we rely on are undated, airline schedules and fares for the route are not confirmed in our records, and the islands have few online booking systems that would show current rates. A number that was right last year can mislead you this year.

What we can do is show you every cost you will meet, in the order you will meet it, and tell you who to ask for each one. That makes a Wallis budget something you can build from real quotes in an evening.

02

Getting there: the biggest line

Airline listings show Aircalin services from Hihifo Airport on Wallis to Nouméa and Nadi, so most journeys are built around one of those two gateways, plus whatever it takes to reach them from home.

Official statistics give about 2,500 km to Nouméa and 780 km to Suva, and 16,000 km to Paris. We do not publish a fare, and we do not publish a timetable, because no current official schedule is in our records. Ask your airline or travel agent for a full quote, including baggage, for your own dates.

03

Where you sleep

The official tourism board lists ten places to stay, all shown as current. Wallis has small family hotels, a B&B, an inn and a guesthouse, while Futuna has two hotels, a guesthouse and a few homestays. There are no dedicated online booking sites for them, so you contact each one directly.

Rates and room counts on the board's pages are undated, so confirm the price, what it includes and how you will pay before you commit. The tourism office head also says about fifteen accommodation offers exist across hotels and homestays, and the plan is to develop homestays rather than build luxury hotels, so expect simple, family-scale places rather than resorts.

04

Getting around: a hire car is the default

There is no public transport and no taxis, so a hire car is needed, and traffic drives on the right. That makes car hire a cost for almost every visitor rather than an optional extra. Six companies are listed for Wallis and four for Futuna on the tourism board's transport page, and one has a desk at the airport.

Rates are on each company's listing and are undated, so ask for a quote that states the daily price, fuel arrangements and any deposit. A coastal drive round Wallis is only about 35 km, which is useful when you plan how many days you need the car.

05

Food, drink and day-to-day spending

The board lists restaurants, snack bars and a bakery across Wallis and Futuna, from pizzeria and snack-bar meals in Mata'Utu to a restaurant at Gahi Bay. We have no menu prices, so we cannot say how much a meal costs.

If you plan to self-cater, remember that supplies reach Futuna through the Leava wharf, which is the only point of entry for outside goods. We give no grocery prices for the same reason as everything else: none are confirmed.

06

Activities and boat trips

Several lagoon trips use taxi boats, kayaks or outrigger canoes, and operators range from a dive centre to a fishing association. Each operator listing carries its own tariff, undated, and some operators work by reservation only. Ask the operator for the current price and what it covers before you go.

If you want to see the islets, ask whether the price is per boat or per person, as the way a quote is framed changes the maths.

07

Money, cards and insurance

The currency is the CFP franc (XPF), pegged to the euro. Many shops lack card terminals, there is no exchange office at Hihifo or Vele airports, and the only retail bank, the Bank of Wallis and Futuna, has 3 ATMs on Wallis and 2 on Futuna. Exchange money before you arrive and carry cash.

Finally, budget for insurance. UK government advice is to take cover for local treatment and medical evacuation, and serious cases are usually evacuated to Nouméa.

Questions people ask.

How expensive is Wallis and Futuna?
We cannot say with confidence, because current fares, room rates and hire prices are not confirmed in our records. Build your budget from quotes for your own dates.
Is there a daily budget for Wallis?
We do not publish one. The costs you will meet are a bed, food, a hire car, any boat trips and insurance, and each should be quoted directly because the published rates are undated.
Can I pay by card on Wallis and Futuna?
Not everywhere. Many shops lack card terminals and there is no exchange office at either airport. Exchange money before arriving and carry cash in CFP francs.
Do I need a hire car?
Yes, in practice. The tourism board says there is no public transport and no taxis, so a hire car is needed. Traffic drives on the right.
