Wallis and Futuna Weather: Climate, Rain and Cyclone Season

Wallis and Futuna weather is tropical, warm and humid, 22-32 °C with over 3,000 mm of rain a year. Cyclone season, when to go, and what we cannot say.

Wallis and Futuna weather is tropical maritime: warm and humid, between 22 and 32 °C, with rainfall of over 3,000 mm a year according to the tourism board. Cyclone season runs from November to April, and the board rates the risk as low to moderate. Expect warmth and some rain in any month.

01

The climate in brief

The tourism board describes the climate of the islands as tropical maritime, warm and humid, with temperatures between 22 and 32 °C. Another source gives an average temperature of about 26.6 °C with humidity near 80%. Put together, you are looking at a place where warm air and high humidity are the baseline, whatever the month.

Our records do not describe the trade winds, so we will not say much about them. If wind matters to you, for kite sports or sailing, ask the operators directly.

02

Rain and temperature

The board's figure is rainfall of over 3,000 mm a year. That is a lot of water for islands of about 142 km² in total, and it is worth planning around: bring a light waterproof, and be flexible about outdoor days.

Wallis has no streams, and its crater lakes are the island's main freshwater reserves, so rain matters to daily life as well as to your holiday. Temperature in the sense of the day-to-day range, the 22 to 32 °C above, is the most useful guide when you are checking Wallis and Futuna climate before packing.

03

Cyclone season

Cyclone season runs from November to April. The tourism board rates the risk as low to moderate, but the territory has seen real storms. Cyclone Ofa in February 1990 passed about 240 km east of Wallis; a storm surge of about 1 m flooded the east coast and residents were evacuated, with minor damage and no deaths.

Cyclone Tomas, on 14 to 15 March 2010, was category 4. It caused no deaths among inhabitants but heavy damage to homes, crops and public facilities, mostly on Futuna. Cyclone Tino, on 17 to 18 January 2020, hit Wallis hardest, with downed trees, flooded roads, damaged homes and power cuts, and no deaths reported.

04

Lasting effects of storms

Weather here leaves marks. Since Cyclone Tomas the main coastal road has been cut at Pointe des Pyramides on Futuna. The Lausikula chapel on Wallis was rebuilt after cyclone damage (Cyclone Evan, 2012) and blessed in 2014. If you are travelling in the season, ask your host about road and power conditions before you set out.

05

When to go

There is no single official answer. Our records give no reliable month-by-month climate table, so treat your choice of dates as a judgement and let events and the November to April cyclone season guide you.

Events can shape your dates as much as rain. 28 April is Saint Pierre Chanel's day, with a pilgrimage to Poi, and it is a public holiday. 14 July and 29 July bring a kava ceremony, dances and a mass that visitors can join. On 15 August dancers perform at the Assumption festival, and 28 August is a pilgrimage at the Chanel chapel on Mont Mauga.

06

Weather and your plans

Humpback whales and pygmy killer whales may be seen in late summer or early autumn, with no guarantee. If flights matter, remember that inter-island flights do not run on Sundays and a storm can disrupt any schedule, so confirm with the airline. Light clothing suits the warm climate, and modest dress suits local expectations at churches and in villages.
