Wallis to Futuna flight: what we know and what to confirm

Wallis to Futuna flight guide: no boat link, no Sunday flights, two airports 230 km apart, and what to confirm with the Tourist Office before booking.

The Wallis to Futuna flight is the only way to travel between the two islands, because there is no public sea crossing; flights do not run on Sundays. The records we hold do not give a current timetable, carrier, fare or luggage limit, so confirm all four with the Tourist Office before you plan around the hop.

01

The short answer: it is a flight or nothing

If you are asking how to get from Wallis to Futuna, the answer is by air. The official tourism information is clear that there is no public sea crossing between the two islands, and that inter-island flights do not run on Sundays.

The distance explains why. The territory's own site puts the two island groups roughly 230 km apart, with Wallis (Uvea) in the northeast and the Hoorn Islands, Futuna and Alofi, in the southwest. That is open ocean, not a short ferry hop.

02

The two airports

You leave from Hihifo Airport (WLS) on Wallis, which has a 2,100 m asphalt runway and is also where the international Aircalin services land. You arrive at Pointe Vele airport on Futuna, in the Vele area of the Alo kingdom.

If you are searching in French, you will see this written as vol Wallis Futuna. Whatever the spelling, the route runs between these two airfields, and both are small, so treat any online flight listing as a prompt to ask questions rather than a finished answer.

03

What we cannot tell you yet

Honesty matters more than a tidy page, so here is exactly what the records do not settle. We have no official current timetable for the inter-island hop, and the sources we found disagree about which airline operates it and how many flights run each week. We have no fare, no luggage allowance for the short flight and no confirmed flight time.

You may see figures quoted elsewhere for frequency or duration. We have left them out because we could not tie them to a current official source, and a wrong schedule can cost you a connection.

04

Who to ask, and what to ask

The official tourism board, wallis-futuna.travel, has a contact form for exactly this kind of question. Before you pay for anything, ask the Tourist Office these questions in writing: which carrier flies Wallis to Futuna on your dates, how many times a week, what the luggage limit is, and where tickets are sold locally.

Ask for the answer in an email so you have it to hand at the check-in desk. Because the international flights and the inter-island flight may be sold separately, also ask whether a ticket for one affects the other if a flight is delayed.

05

Plan around Sundays, pilgrims and weather

Sunday is the clear gap: no inter-island flights, so build your move to Futuna around a weekday and leave room either side if you have an international flight to catch.

Demand rises at certain times. The tourism office head says about 1,000 pilgrims travel around 28 April, the feast of Saint Pierre Chanel, and extra inter-island flights are added then. That suggests seats can be tight around the date, so book early and ask what is on offer.

Weather matters too. The cyclone season runs from November to April, with risk rated low to moderate by the tourism board, and when Cyclone Tino hit in January 2020 inter-island flights were cancelled. If you are returning to Wallis for an onward connection, do not cut the margin fine.

06

Arriving on Futuna

On Futuna there is no public transport and no taxis, so arrange a hire car in advance. Futuna's roads are poorer than those on Wallis, with dirt roads to key sites, so allow more time than the map suggests. Car hire companies are listed on the Futuna side of the tourism board's site, including some in Leava and in Alo and Sigave.

Futuna has only a small accommodation offer, and the whole territory counts about fifteen hotels and homestays between them, so book your bed before you book the flight.

There is also no exchange office at either airport and many shops lack card terminals, so carry enough cash in CFP francs before you board.

07

Making the hop part of a trip

A week lets you see both islands without rushing, and a few extra days let you add the boat trip to Alofi. Our guide to how many days to spend in Wallis and Futuna sets out the plan day by day.
